FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DALLAS, TX—June 29, 2006—Challenging previous research, a new study indicates that older physicians have the same work ethic as their younger counterparts. Younger physicians place
more emphasis on quality of life and organizational support, and now older physicians are demanding this as well.
“Older physicians are wrong about the young physician’s work ethic,” says Dr. James Murrow, Associate Professor of Marketing at Drury University, who co-authored the survey. “The older physician’s work ethic is the same as the younger physician’s, and none are willing to work hard enough to keep up with demand,” he says, referring to the healthcare provider shortage currently facing the United States.
Considering the nation’s growing physician shortage—and looming crisis, as reported by USA Today—healthcare administrators must take heed to improve physician retention. There is an increasing need for hospitals to fill urgent healthcare needs and retain existing providers.
The survey, conducted by Delta Physician Placement and Drury University, also finds that more
than one-third of physicians are highly motivated to leave their employer and believe their employer “falls far short of expectations.”
